- A major component failed. A motor, logic-board, or drive-system failure makes the repair too extensive or costly.

SENSOR HEIGHT Why are opener safety sensors mounted close to the floor?
Photoelectric safety-reversing sensors are mounted no higher than six inches above the garage floor so the beam protects the lower part of the door opening. Mounting them higher can leave an unsafe gap beneath the beam.
OPENER FACT Safety sensors belong no more than six inches above the garage floor.
SUNLIGHT INTERFERENCE Can direct sunlight make a sensor act as though the beam is blocked?
Yes. Direct sunlight shining into the receiving safety sensor can interfere with its infrared signal. The opener may refuse to close normally or respond as though something is blocking the opening even when the sensor path looks clear.
OPENER FACT A clear opening does not rule out sunlight interference at the receiving sensor.
BATTERY BACKUP Will a battery-backup opener still operate during a power outage?
Models equipped with a functioning battery-backup system can continue opening and closing the garage door when household power is unavailable. Operation depends on the opener having that feature and on the battery’s condition and charge.
OPENER FACT Backup operation requires both a compatible opener and a serviceable battery.
REVERSAL TEST When should the opener’s safety-reversal system be tested?
The safety-reversal system should be tested after travel or force adjustments. The standard contact-reversal check uses a 1-1/2-inch-high solid object—commonly a 2x4 laid flat on the garage floor beneath the door.
